Toshiba's nuclear flagship goes bust after $10 billion losses
... Bloomberg noted yesterday: "Westinghouse Electric Co., once

businesses to stave off bankruptcy. Toshiba said yesterday it expects
to book a net loss of $9.1 billion for the current fiscal year, which
ends on Friday - a record loss for a Japanese manufacturer.
... The BBC noted that Toshiba's share-price has been in freefall,

Home For First Time In 4 Years
... Vladimir Putin spoke with Donald Trump on the phone six days after
his victory on November 14th. Hours after their phone call was over,
Putin proceeded to bomb the hell out of Aleppo and wage total war.
... In just around two weeks time, Putin and Assad managed, in the
words of the IB Times, to "bomb their way to victory" in Aleppo.
Today, we learn they've reportedly retaken 35 districts in the city
and corralled ISIS and other rebel terrorists into a remaining five.
... Russia said its Syrian government allies had taken control of five
more districts of Aleppo, and had now seized 35 districts from the
rebels during an advance that has changed the course of the conflict.
... The government now appears closer to victory than at any point
since 2012, the year after rebels took up arms to overthrow President
Bashar al-Assad in a war that has killed hundreds of thousands of
people, made more than half of Syrians homeless and created the
world's worst refugee crisis.
... The rebels' loss of the eastern half of Aleppo, Syria's largest
city before the war, would be the biggest victory of the conflict so
far for Assad, securing his grip on all Syria's main cities.
"Unprecedented" Cyber Attack Hits 2 Lakh Computers In 150 Countries;
India 3rd Most Affected
... Once the information is encrypted, a message is displayed on the
screen declaring the same and asking the user to pay USD 300 (in
Bitcoin) if they wish to retrieve their data. Phishing emails employ
"worms" to spread the attack in a local network. If even one of the
computers in a local network is compromised because of a phishing
email, the worm spreads rapidly and automatically encrypts data in all
computers in the network. This is why Friday's attack spread so
rapidly across the world.
... WannaCry swept across Europe and Asia quickly, locking up critical
systems like the UK's National Health Service (NHS), a large telecom
in Spain, and other businesses and institutions around the world, all
in record time.
...Many commentators criticised the US National Security Agency (NSA)
for having indirectly caused the attack. The NSA had prior knowledge
of the Windows loophole that the hackers exploited on Friday, but the
agency did not disclose this loophole as they planned to exploit the
same themselves to their benefit. This exploit, known as EternalBlue,
was stolen by a group of hackers, who made it freely available in
April. The perpetrators of Friday's attack used EternalBlue to
engineer the fast-spreading worm.
'Accidental hero' halts ransomware attack and warns: this is not over
... But the spread of the attack was brought to a sudden halt when one
UK cybersecurity researcher tweeting as @malwaretechblog, with the
help of Darien Huss from security firm Proofpoint, found and
inadvertently activated a "kill switch" in the malicious software.
... "I was out having lunch with a friend and got back about 3pm and
saw an influx of news articles about the NHS and various UK
organisations being hit," he told the Guardian. "I had a bit of a look
into that and then I found a sample of the malware behind it, and saw
that it was connecting out to a specific domain, which was not
registered. So I picked it up not knowing what it did at the time."
... The kill switch was hardcoded into the malware in case the creator
wanted to stop it spreading. This involved a very long nonsensical
domain name that the malware makes a request to – just as if it was
looking up any website – and if the request comes back and shows that
the domain is live, the kill switch takes effect and the malware stops
spreading. The domain cost $10.69 and was immediately registering
thousands of connections every second.
How to protect your computer against the ransomware attack

against the ransomware by downloading the new patch from Windows.
After Overthrowing A Corrupt President, South Koreans Peacefully Elect A New One
... Furthermore, the snap election was contested by 13 candidates, the
most crowded contest in the country's electoral history. Despite this,
the winner, Moon Jae-in, won with a comfortable 41% of the vote, 17
percentage points ahead of the runner-up, the largest difference in
South Korean history. The election also saw record voter turnout of
almost 80%, fuelled by a surge of younger voters.
... Moon Jae-in is a former human rights attorney and student
activist. He belongs to the Democratic Party of Korea, and his ideas
have the potential of altering the dynamics of South Korean polity and
international geopolitics when it comes to the delicate conflict on
the Korean peninsula. The South Korean election will have extensive
international geopolitical ramifications
... The South Korean people gave a stinging endorsement of democracy
in the past months. South Korea itself is a young democracy: the Sixth

democracy has also proven to be inclusive and vibrant. In 2016, as

Thanks To Deregulation, Farmer Markets In Maharashtra Now Earn Rs 5
Crore Each Week
... According to NITI Aayog, this phenomenal increase in outputs and
profits for farmers is thanks to the government's move last July to
take fruits and vegetables out of the purview of the Agriculture
Produce Market Committee (APMC) Act. This deregulated the farmer
market and gave more power and autonomy to farmers to sell their
produce without the hassle of countless middlemen.
>> can the leftist fold reconcile with this? Their usual drive is towards regulating everything, for the farmers' "protection". Turns out those protective measures were what was killing them, and removing them can give farmers a fresh opportunity to thrive. Earlier it was retailers like Big Bazar etc who were being allowed to buy directly from farmers and that was being criticized. Understandably so, as they could use single large buyer power to bargain and hoard. But simply going forth with deregulation the whole way, and making farmers free to sell to whoever they want.. ie, farmer-centric deregulation vs retailer-centric deregulation, seems to be what worked. The leftist paradigm would have simply stopped the retailer deregulation and kept the farmers locked in APMCs.

Icelandic Leftist Poisons Robert Spencer
A new phase in the Left's campaign of demonizing those whom it hates.
... The most likely scenario is that this young man, or whoever
drugged me, heard that a notorious "racist" was coming to Reykjavik,
by chance saw me in the restaurant, and decided to teach me a lesson
...I should have seen it coming. After all, my visit had triggered a
firestorm of abuse in the Icelandic press, all based on American
Leftist talking points. Every story about my visit had the same
elements: the notice that the SPLC claims that I purvey "hate speech,"
which is a subjective judgment used to shut down dissent from the
establishment line; the fact that I am banned from Britain, with no
mention of the key detail that I was banned for saying that Islam has
doctrines of violence (which is like being banned for saying water is
wet) and for the crime of supporting Israel; and the false claim that
I incited the Norwegian mass murderer Anders Breivik to kill (in
reality, I'm no more responsible for Breivik's murders than the
Beatles are for Charles Manson's). After the event, one article even
featured a big photo of Breivik, but quoted nary a thing I said that
... Not a single Icelandic media outlet that ran a story about my
coming or about the event itself contacted me for comment, much less
for rebuttal to the charges they made against me. One TV station did
air an interview with me in which the interviewer refused to believe
that I did not feel responsible for the Breivik murders, and asked me
about them again and again.
... After the event, articles in the Icelandic press included quotes
from the 50 protesters, but none included even a single quotation or
description of anything we had actually said. None quoted any of the
500 brave Icelanders who braved the hatred of the politically correct
elites to come to the Grand Hotel to hear me and Ms. Williams – a
staggeringly large number in a country of 300,000 people.
... It's clear: jihad and Islamization are not subjects that Icelandic
politicians and media opinion-makers want Icelanders to discuss.
That's all the more reason why it must be discussed.
... But meanwhile, I learned my lesson. The lesson I learned was that
media demonization of those who dissent from the Leftist line is
direct incitement to violence. By portraying me and others who raise
legitimate questions about jihad terror and Sharia oppression as
racist, bigoted Islamophobes, without allowing us a fair hearing, the
media in Iceland and elsewhere in the West is actively endangering
those who dare to dissent.

Rate of Recovery of Bad Loans of Public Sector Banks Falls Further in
... Unless the government takes steps towards improving this rate of
recovery of bad loans, no serious achievements can be made on this
front. One particular point that the lawyers who deal with such things
have been making is the lack of debt recovery tribunals and the fact
that the ones that are there are not adequately staffed. This is
something that can easily be set right.
... Without addressing this point, any other moves to clean up the bad
loans of public sector banks, will not achieve much. These other moves
will basically end up postponing the resolution of the problem, which
is pretty much what they have done up until now.
... Large corporates who have taken on the loans and defaulted on it,
should not be allowed to get away scot free. Given this, it is very
important that the institutional mechanisms required to improve the
rate of recovery of bad loans are firmed up and banks are allowed to
do whatever it takes to recover bad loans from large corporates in
general and crony capitalists in particular.

additions in 2014-2015, and suddenly the number doesn't seem too high,
given that no demonetisation was carried out in 2014-2015.
... Even if the government doesn't do anything, taxpayers get added
every year, especially when the minimum tax slab continues to remain
the same. In 2014-2015, the minimum tax slab was Rs 2,50,000, which is
where it continues to be. This basically means that inflation alone
would have ensured that more people came into the tax bracket and thus
increased the tax base.
... Hence, the total amount of undisclosed income or black money
identified by the income tax department in 2016-2017 stood at more
than Rs 31,211 crore.
... It is safe to say that in inflation adjusted terms more
undisclosed income was identified by the income tax department in
2012-2013 than in 2016-2017. In 2013-2014, the number stood at Rs
1,01,182 crore, which is significantly more than 2016-2017. And it is
worth remembering here that these numbers happened without
demonetisation. In fact, as the numbers clearly show the efficacy of
the income tax department when it comes to identification of black
money has come down since 2014-2015.
