Here's a thought experiment. WARNING: This post can be both crazy and depressing. I just wanted to get it out of my system.. the idea's been festering inside since a long time now.
Imagine that there is an alien race that needs to move to another planet, having used up theirs. Same case as in Independence Day. Imagine that their methods are subtler, and after having sent some scouting missions and discovering Earth, it's going to take a very long time for the scouts to go all the way back and the race to come back to Earth. Say, about 500 years or so. Instead of doing nothing at all for the 500 years and then having the risky prospect of armed resistance (which the aliens in Independence Day had to face and because of which they got screwed), they come up with an innovative idea: Seeing that there are already some destructive tendencies among the Earth's leaders, they decide to spend 200 years subtly influencing events in such a way that the humans end up doing enormous damage to themselves, or at least they get stuck in things and end up not advancing the way they would have if allowed to progress naturally.
Now, put YOURSELF in the shoes of this alien agent. You have been given the task of clearing out the intelligent population of this planet as silently and efficiently as possible, with minimum risk of any fightback. You know the human species is one mean cookie, they have independence of thought, free will, caring for others and the spark of creativity built into them, all of which guarantee their resilience if you ever tried to take them head-on. So you have to use subtler, darker methods. You have a lot of time available to play this out.
So this malevolent alien agent easily fabricates the wealth indicators of the day. To couterfeit a currency you only need a technology superior to the issuing government's : all paper currency today is dependent on a technological race between authority and private players. It quickly amasses a lot of wealth and power and subordinates the corrupt leaders and the institutions of the day. It sets up a centralized banking system that is unanswerable to the electorate but which by force takes taxes from them. All of this with deception in outward appearance to give the system legitimacy. The decades pass and the economic system rigidifies into a global debt slavery machine, where even the seemingly well-to-do are trapped in their own little squirrel cages.
It funds both sides of conflicts and provokes war : World War 1 and 2 being two big examples. There are of course other players in the fray as well.. if this party was the overall ruler then it wouldn't need so much secrecy. By the end of WW2, it's clear that people won't agree to meaninglessly kill each other anymore, so it reverts to subtler methods.
The factory-based education system is tied in with the economic system so the people are compelled to send their children through it. Unbeknownst to the parents, here the kids are conditioned, their innate genius and critical thinking ability is severely eroded on a massive scale. Competition rather than collaboration is drilled into them, and the economic system is also rigged to prove that the ruthless competitors are more successful. It is not possible to degrade all the children, but its sufficient. The ones who don't get conditioned, are branded as failures, are locked away from resources and positions from where they'd be able to mount a serious challenge.
Next, it reuses the same chemicals technology it was developing for war, to make fertilizers and pesticides, and drugs the agriculture of the world. Food nutrition and food stocks start dropping in a few decades, and cancer proliferates. It pushes on with this, with the newest strategy being GM, genetically modified food which is pushed to the world's plates BECAUSE it is harmful, and much more potent : by polluting the gene pool, people cannot revert back to healthy food simply by not spraying their crops with the chemicals. So a slow poisoning agenda is afoot.
Switching back to the real world, here's a quote that should illustrate the GM food reality:
At the same time, the global economic system is rigged to promote ecological devastation, natural resource depletion and pollution. Take a look at all the recent oil spill events. It literally looks like someone WANTED to inflict the maximum damage possible. Fossilized carbon, sequestered over millions of years to make present life on Earth possible, is dug out and burnt back into the atmosphere, spurning runaway climate change. When the harms of fossil fuels start becoming apparent, an inferior nuclear technology is pushed to the world energy market as a solution, whose true purpose is to spread as much radioactive contamination as possible, and electricity is a silly byproduct. And its secondary purpose is also to use up the nuclear reserves of the planet for producing electricity (which can be produced for relatively zero harm through renewable sources) when it could instead be kept in reserves for guarding against an extra-terrestial challenge like a dangerous meteorite or an alien invasion. Poisoning from all quarters possible.
Now consider that this might be the design of one alien race, and there are multiple parties out there (makes sense: what's the probability that there's only 2 space-worthy life forms in the whole universe? Either it's just us, or there's several planets with life!). So the others are doing the crop circles to communicate with us (must be of the artistic type).
And it's not a lost cause. Despite the best of efforts, everywhere the innate souls inside people is speaking up and exposing the illusions left, right and center. People are figuring things out on their own : for that is the true nature of the learner : to be able to learn even when there's no teacher present. And they're connecting and sharing with each other. The truth has an uncanny way of manifesting itself. It's too early to say whether the alien agent (or agency) will be successful or not. But there's definitely a grand game afoot, and you're living through it, my friend!

In 2009 the American Academy of Environmental Medicine called for a moratorium of GM foods, safety testing and labeling. Their review of the available literature at the time noted that animals show serious health risks associated with GM food consumption including infertility, immune dysregulation, accelerated aging, dysregulation of genes associated with cholesterol synthesis, insulin regulation, cell signaling, and protein formation, and changes in the liver, kidney, spleen and gastrointestinal system.
